Introduction:

Review: – We were warned about hypocrisy of the Pharisees

  • Greek word for hypocrisy carries the idea of walking around with a mask on, not showing people why they really are
  • The hypocrites emphasis is on their acting
    • No emphasis upon heart before God
    • Emphasis on appearance before man
  • We must deal with our hypocrisy
  • All Christians must beware of hypocrisy
    • We are all in danger of hypocrisy in our lives
    • – Peter and Barnabas struggled with hypocrisy within the early church

Sermon Outline:

“The Cure for Hypocrisy”

  • Fear God, Not man ()
    • Fear – to have reference in regard to something
    • – because we fear God not man, we do not shrink back from what the Word of God says
    • Jesus shows why people should fear God and not men.
    • Despite everything the people had see Jesus do, they still feared the Pharisees.
  • Confess Your Allegiance to God, Not Man ()
    • If we have truly confessed our allegiance Jesus he will not forsake us in this life or the life to come.

“I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him! Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.

“And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the angels of God, but the one who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God. 10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. 11 And when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself or what you should say, 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.” (ESV)

12:1 In the meantime, when so many thousands of the people had gathered together that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops. (ESV)

13 And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him, so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy. (ESV)

The Lord is on my side; I will not fear.
What can man do to me? (ESV)

but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please man, but to please God who tests our hearts. (ESV)

14 For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; (ESV)

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (ESV)

For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt. (ESV)

24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. (ESV)
