Title: Mighty God: El Gibbor
Speaker: Pastor Darin Struble

Introduction:

Question: Are you ready for Christmas?
– Preparing for a potluck at work.
○ Spending 3 weeks hanging decorations
○ Even though this is less ideal, still looking forward to Christmas.
– So looking forward to Christmas
○ So much that Darin programmed 104.1 into his radio (24 hour Christmas music)
– The world is CRAZY right now
○ In the craziness it is comforting to know the reliable Christmas (celebration of coming of Emmanuel)
○ In the craziness longing for the hope and joy that Christmas brings
– Not only the craziness of the world but the craziness of self
○ The sinfulness we have been forgIven
○ The closet full of sin
○ We need to focus on Emmanuel during this time
– Isaiah 1:18 – The hope of Emmanuel coming
– Isaiah 7:14 – The Messiah will come
– “Mighty God”
– Mighty – “Gibbor”
○ 1 Samuel 6:18
○ Judges 6:12
○ A mighty warrior/Champion
○ Isaiah 10:20
○ God is described as a great warrior
– So what is significant about Jesus, Immanuel, being called “Mighty God”?

Sermon Outline:

1. Jesus came to defeat our enemy Satan
i.
ii.
iii. Hebrews 2:14
iv. Revelation 20:10

3. Jesus came to defeat our enemy, Death

What does this mean for us today?

1. Satan is defeated and he knows it
2. Satan is not our problem, the problem is ourselves
3. Satan is a finite being who cannot be everywhere
4. We need to trust in what Jesus has done for the forgiveness of sin
5. When we trust in Jesus we receive the gift of eternal life (Jesus defeats death)
6. If we have lost someone who has trusted in Christ we can rest in knowing that person has conquered death through Jesus Christ
If we are sick we know we can conquer death through Jesus Christ

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of his government and of peace
there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
from this time forth and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. (ESV)

16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. (ESV)

13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

14 The Lord God said to the serpent,

“Because you have done this,
cursed are you above all livestock
and above all beasts of the field;
on your belly you shall go,
and dust you shall eat
all the days of your life.
15 I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head,
and you shall bruise his heel.” (ESV)

Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. (ESV)

21 So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. 22 For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, 23 but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin. (ESV)

12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. (ESV)

51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. 53 For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. 54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written:

“Death is swallowed up in victory.”
55 “O death, where is your victory?
O death, where is your sting?”

56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (ESV)
