For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;
his faithfulness continues through all generations.
Ed Sheeran, a singer/song writer, wrote lyrics to a song that was inspired by a girl he loved. Among those lyrics were these words, “‘Cause honey your soul can never grow old, it’s evergreen”. An evergreen tree is an excellent word picture to think of when imagining what enduring love looks like. An evergreen tree is best known for being able to endure cold weather, and dry seasons. I’ve lived in the Midwest most of my life and truly enjoy seeing the evergreen trees continue to grow despite the snow, ice, below zero temperatures and other harsh conditions we face.
True love is indeed “evergreen”. It does not fade away in the midst of hardship. It continues to grow when the circumstances surrounding it are beating against it like a blizzard or when the weather is dry. No matter the season, in good and bad times, times of plenty and times of lack, there it stands. It stands when those around it are dying and decay is soon covered with an icy layer of snow.
In today’s society, love like this is rare. Marriage comes to mind easily when I think of love but God also commands us to love our children, our neighbors’ children, our neighbors, those who look different from us or think different from us. Please don’t misunderstand me, when I say “love” I’m referring to Biblical love. The love that says ‘no’ to my own selfish desires in order to say ‘yes’ to God’s. The love that serves without expecting service. The love that speaks a difficult word to save one caught in sin. This type of love is magnified in Jesus Christ. He came as a baby in the humblest of circumstances and lived a life of sacrifice and service for God’s glory. His humility and love was seen as He submitted to the Father’s will and died a cruel death on a tree. What amazing love that God has shown us! What humility and sacrifice! This truly is the best picture of love that “…endures all things
b). Love like this does not fade away in the midst of circumstances. It continues to grow. “Love never ends
I love the evergreen tree because it reminds me that God’s love never fades away! I cannot love like this apart from first bowing at the foot of the cross, repenting of my sins – where I’ve fallen short of God’s glory – and asking His forgiveness. Until He is Lord over me I will never know love or be known to truly love others. Are you rooted in His love? Bask daily in His love and as believers in Jesus Christ may our love reflect our Savior’s. May our love be evergreen.
