Yesterday I had the kids’ diaper bag stocked, shoes on everyone’s feet, baby was already strapped in to her car seat, and we were heading out the door for a morning outing when I realized I was missing something – my van keys! I started my search and have continued searching now 2 days to no avail. It is a helpless feeling when something is lost. As I racked my brain trying to retrace my steps I felt so frustrated. I started to give in to a pity party. I’m inadequate. I’m so forgetful. How could I lose something so important? Why didn’t I make a spare?
I’m reminded in times of frustration like this that I’m not in control. I am imperfect in my memory and imperfect in my decision making. I’m at the mercy of God in all things but I realize it most when I lose something or someone important. Instead of dwelling on my own failures I need something so much greater to dwell on! I need my eyes turned to God – the God who never is without perfect understanding. Who knows every intricate detail of the universe. The God who is eternal.
He determines the number of the stars;
he gives to all of them their names.
Great is our Lord, and abundant in power;
his understanding is beyond measure.
Abraham was asked by God to count the stars as an illustration of God’s magnificent promise to him but he couldn’t do it! God however knows not only each of the stars He’s created but their names as well! He even knows how many hairs are on our heads!
Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.
God is not only limitless in His understanding but is also perfect in it. He does not ever do something as a plan B but is always doing what is best and what is good. Even if it is a trial there is goodness and purpose.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
My missing keys are a small situation in the grand scheme of eternity. However, this is big reminder to me that I am small, finite, and imperfect in my understanding. I also am a child of the God of the universe who is great, infinite and perfect in His understanding and takes great care of even our little problems.
casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
Instead of a pity party my heart has been moved to praise God! In all things – great and small – we have an opportunity to praise Him. God is worthy of praise because He doesn’t lose anything! He sent Jesus to die an excruciating death and then rise again so we who were lost eternally could be united with Him! Are you lost? Do you know that Jesus used a parable of a woman who lost one coin to show people the ultimate lost and found story? She searched her house diligently until she found it. She then rejoiced with her friends all because one coin was lost and then found!
Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
God doesn’t desire that anyone should perish but that all would come to Him! Our sins cause us to be separated from God. Everyone has sinned-Jesus is the only One who lived as a person but being fully God He could not sin. God knew we were lost and loved us so much He sent Jesus to rescue us! He desired we be bought back from sins’ enslavement and paid our redemption with His blood. Trust Him as your Lord and Savior today! Like the woman searching for a lost coin it was not the coin that could find its way back to its owner. We too have no way to find our way to God. He did the work for us! He found us!
If you do not know Him trust Him now! If you do know Him then praise Him for ultimately your salvation and then also for His character of being perfect and infinite and supplying what we lack. It is because of Him that we can truly sing praises and find surpassing peace and joy! What a joy to have been lost and now found.
